Supreme Court has a lot of work to do and little time to do it with a sizeable case backlog

  • By MARK SHERMAN and LINDSAY WHITEHURST - Associated Press

The Supreme Court has a lot of work left to do, and little time to do it. The court is headed into its final few weeks with nearly half of the cases heard this year undecided, including ones that could reshape the law on everything from guns to abortion to social media. The justices are also still weighing whether former President Donald Trump is immune from criminal prosecution in the election interference case against him, more than a month after hearing arguments. The court has heard 61 cases so far but still has 29 cases to decide.

Thefts of charging cables pose yet another obstacle to appeal of electric vehicles

  • By TOM KRISHER - AP Auto Writer

Across the U.S., thieves have been targeting electric-vehicle charging stations, intent on stealing the cables, which contain copper wiring. The price of copper is near a record high on global markets, which means criminals stand to collect rising sums of cash from selling the material. The stolen cables often disable entire charging stations. Broken-down chargers have emerged as the latest obstacle for U.S. automakers in their effort to convert more Americans to EVs despite public anxiety about a scarcity of charging stations. If even finding a charging station doesn’t necessarily mean finding functioning cables, it becomes another reason for buyers to stick with gasoline-fueled or hybrid vehicles, at least for now.

  • By MITCH STACY - AP Sports Writer

Josh Naylor hit his 17th homer and Tyler Freeman made two impressive defensive plays, helping the Cleveland Guardians beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-3 in the opener of the Ohio Cup series. Hong Kong invokes new law to cancel passports of 6 overseas-based activists, including Nathan Law

  • By KANIS LEUNG - Associated Press

The Hong Kong government has canceled the passports of six overseas-based activists under the new national security law, stepping up its crackdown on dissidents who moved overseas. Former pro-democracy lawmaker Nathan Law, unionist Mung Siu-tat and activists Simon Cheng, Finn Lau, Johnny Fok and Tony Choi are accused of endangering national security. The government said they have absconded to the U.K. Rewards were offered last year for their arrests, a move that drew sharp criticism from Western governments. Hong Kong authorities also banned anyone from providing funds to the six, among other restrictions. The government said it acted because the six were continuing to engage in activities that endanger national security.
