We could see as well at night as nocturnal animals (animals that are awake at night).

"Nocturnal species" refers to animals which are awake during the night instead of during the day. "The midnight world" is the world around midnight, or during the night in general.
Humans are not nocturnal, so we have good daytime vision but bad night vision. Nocturnal species have good night vision. Therefore, the sentence is saying that somehow we could see the midnight world very well, like nocturnal animals.
It sounds like some kind of metaphor that would make more sense in context. (Was it from a novel or a literary essay?)
